Compare
An agency and a pipeline are not the same purchase
Most comparisons of this kind are written to make the agency look slow and expensive. That is not a useful page, and it is not true. A good content agency does things software cannot do. The honest question is which of those things you are actually paying for.
What a content agency is genuinely better at
Talking to people
Interviewing your customers, pulling a story out of your head, sitting through a trade show. Original research starts with a conversation, and no pipeline has one.
Absorbing a vague brief
You can tell an agency to make you look credible in a market and they will come back with a plan. Software needs the question to be sharper than that.
Owning the outcome
A named person who answers for the result, argues with your assumptions, and tells you when the thing you asked for is the wrong thing. That is a service, and it is worth paying for when you need it.
If that is the work you need, hire the agency. This page is about the other work: the steady stream of articles that has to keep going every month, where the bottleneck is not insight, it is production.
Side by side, including where the agency wins
| A content agency | cpywrk | |
|---|---|---|
| Original research and interviews | Their craft. They can talk to your customers and your engineers. | Not possible. cpywrk works from what is already written down. |
| Deciding what the company should be known for | A strategist who learns your market and argues with you about it. | Keyword research and your brief. The judgment stays yours. |
| Consistency across a year of articles | Varies with who is assigned and how busy they are. | The same six checks on every article, every time. |
| Turnaround on one article | Scheduled. It joins a queue and a call gets booked. | Starts when you start it. |
| Knowledge of how you sound | Lives with the account team, and leaves when they do. | Stored as a brand profile. Corrections stick and compound. |
| Getting it published | Usually handed back to you as a document. | One button to WordPress or Shopify, images included. |
| What the cost follows | Time, so it rises with volume. | A subscription, so volume is what you are buying. |
The cost question, answered properly
We are not going to put an agency retainer next to a subscription price and call it a comparison, because agency pricing does not work that way. There is no standard rate, the range spans an order of magnitude, and the average everyone quotes sits inside an upper cluster rather than describing a typical agency. Agencies get accused of vagueness about this, mostly unfairly: what gets sold as one label is at least five different kinds of work.
We wrote the long version, with what actually moves the number and eight questions to ask before signing: SEO agency pricing, and why nobody gives you a straight number.
What is worth saying plainly is the shape of the two bills. An agency charges for time, so more articles cost more. cpywrk charges a subscription for a volume, so the volume is the thing you are buying. Which is cheaper depends entirely on how much you publish, and if the answer is two articles a month, it may well be the agency.
The version most people should consider
Running both. The agency keeps the strategy, the campaigns and the interviews, the work that needs a person in a room. cpywrk carries the recurring article volume underneath it. That usually costs less than buying volume at agency rates, and it frees the expensive people for the work only they can do.
If you wanted the agency because you do not want to run it yourself
Then the plan you want is Managed, where cpywrk chooses the topics, writes, checks and publishes against a brand brief you approve once. Founding customers get the first three months free, with targets agreed in writing first, and if we miss them you walk away having paid nothing and every article published stays yours.
Questions
- Is cpywrk a replacement for a content agency?
- For the production line, yes. For strategy, original research and interviews, no. cpywrk runs research, briefing, drafting, quality checks and publishing as one repeatable system. It does not interview your customers, attend your industry events, or decide what your company should be known for.
- What does a content agency actually cost?
- There is no standard price, and the range spans an order of magnitude. The most commonly quoted average does not describe the typical agency, because agency pricing is lumpy rather than a single hump. cpywrk published a full breakdown of what moves the number and what to ask before signing.
- Can cpywrk work alongside an agency rather than replacing one?
- Yes, and it is a common shape. The agency keeps the strategy, the campaigns and the original research, and cpywrk carries the recurring article volume underneath it. That usually costs less than buying volume at agency rates and frees the agency for work only people can do.
- What happens to my content if I stop using cpywrk?
- Every article already published stays on your site, because it was published to your site rather than hosted by cpywrk. The images are in your own media library for the same reason. You also keep the brand profile you built.
- I want someone to run this for me, not run it myself.
- That is the Managed plan, where cpywrk chooses the topics, writes, checks and publishes against a brand brief you approve once. It is the agency-shaped way to buy cpywrk, and founding customers get the first three months free.
